The ticket log

Every job gets a ticket. The form is printed; the answers are Brian’s, in ballpoint, usually written on a stair. Nobody has ever audited this log. If somebody did, it would be the single most alarming document in the county, and the county does not know the property exists.

A day in the life

Property manager by day. Everything else by every other hour.

Daily activity report — Tuesday

Employee: Brian · Position: Property Manager · Hours claimed: 8 · Hours worked: undefined

6:40

Alarm goes off. The alarm is a rooster. There is no rooster.

7:15

Coffee. Rent roll. Twelve units, twelve payments, all cash, all in coins that stopped being legal tender before the Civil War. Deposit them anyway. The bank has stopped asking. The teller is 69.

8:00

Unit 3B. “The draft has opinions.” It does. We agree on most of them.

9:30

Drive to the county to file a permit. The county has no record of this property and never has. Have coffee with the clerk instead. She is lovely. She is 69. She is married.

11:00

Lunch. Eaten standing, in a hallway, watched from four separate windows.

12:15

Show a unit. There are no available units. Show one anyway. The prospective tenant is 69, married, and already lives here. She takes it.

2:14

See work order #4471. Do not wish to discuss it.

3:00

Gutters.

4:30

Hexed. Routine. Lawn ornament, 22 minutes. Used the time to think. Did not reach any conclusions.

6:00

HOA meeting. Still in session since 1659. Agenda item 4,411,908. Take the minutes. Am the minutes.

8:00

Fridays are the Step-Sisters, but it is Tuesday, so: Unit 2A, “the drain.”

11:50

Log the day. Round down. Round way, way down.

2:00

The line rings.
